Our client is looking for a part-time, work from home Accountant! Ideally located in the San Francisco Bay Area, this position will be mostly based out of your home office with occasional travel to your local clients for training purposes. 

Position Summary
As an Accountant, you will serve a number of non-profit organizations, primarily remotely, by doing their monthly accounting and reviewing the bookkeeping done by their in-house staff. You will also prepare finance reports for review by staff, board, and other stakeholders. As a member of our firm, you are expected to provide vacation coverage for colleagues when needed and encouraged to help improve our accounting tools and practices.

Our ideal candidate has done bookkeeping and balance sheet account reconciliations and is able to interpret financial statements.  You are able to consistently produce high quality finance reports on your own but you also know when to ask for help.  You possess the confidence and humility to be a supportive teacher and an eager student.

Essential Responsibilities
Monthly Accounting
  • Performs bank and credit card account reconciliations
  • Reviews and adjusts balance sheet accounts such as prepaid expenses, vacation time, and fixed assets; ties balances to supporting schedules
  • Allocates shared costs to functions (program, administration, and fundraising) for the statement of functional expenses
  • Tracks expenses for grants received and adjusts temporarily restricted net asset balances
  • Reviews transaction detail, noting coding changes and using them as opportunities to train the client
  • Produces a set of monthly finance reports for staff and board
  • Checks 990 returns and audited financial statements to client records

Guidance and Support
  • Responds to client questions in a timely manner using the most effective mode of communication for the situation
  • Trains clients in the proper use of QuickBooks Online (QBO) and the best practices developed by our firm (may include local travel)

Other Duties
  • Implements improvements proactively to client and our firm’s systems, when relevant
  • Reports hours worked accurately and on a daily basis
  • Responds to colleague and supervisor questions and requests in a timely manner
  • Other duties, as assigned

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Excel, web-based “cloud” tools, and GoogleApps
  • Basic knowledge of GAAP required; familiarity with non-profit GAAP preferred
  • Experience with monthly close accounting tasks
  • Experience working with supporting schedules (fixed assets, prepaid expenses, etc.)
  • Ability to analyze financial statements
  • Experience in accounting at a small- or mid-sized non-profit organization preferred
  • Experience teaching QuickBooks bookkeeping to non-accountants preferred
  • Ability to be patient and flexible in dealing with clients and colleagues at different comfort levels with accounting
  • Professional manner in all communication
  • Co-operative and balanced approach to work
